“Halloween is the one night of the year that a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”–Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) Mean Girls, 2004Halloween is a time where we can dress up as an extension of our personalities or else be someone we wish we could be. For many people, this means being “sexy.” Sexy is put in quotes as many costume manufacturers think sexy is short hemlines and strategic cut-outs. These types of costumes are usually the only options for women at the big box stores. You can be just about a sexy anything–sexy witch, sexy kitten, sexy Mrs. Potato Head, sexy Big Bird, even a sexy guitar. While that’s just fine for some folks, these “sexy” costumes shouldn’t be the only options for women. Men have much more of a variety, and very little of their costumes are labeled sexy. Also, not everybody wants to be “sexy.” Some people may not have the time or skill to make their own costumes, and would prefer to purchase one. Again, their options should not be so limited.
The other problem with the “sexy” costume trend is that often times, these costumes aren’t sexy, they’re sleazy. If you’re an adult and aware of the kind of attraction you’re going to get, go for it. As long as you’re in control and doing it because you want to, have fun. We’re not saying that it’s wrong to be sexy something for Halloween; we’re saying that you should be sexy by your standards, not a costume manufacturer’s standards. However, many purchasers of these “sexy” costumes are teenage girls who aren’t quite aware and can’t handle the attention that will come to them from wearing these costumes. They may also feel that they have to wear costumes like this as again, these types of costumes are the only one major retailers seem to sell, and that they’ll fit in.
So, LivLunatics, what do you think? Are sexy costumes all that bad? What do you plan on being for Halloween? Any suggestions for those stuck in a rut? Let us know!
